23 Things to Do Instead of Watching the Telly

I’ve just been over TV lately. I don’t know if it’s the fact that it’s summer and nothing good is on, or if it’s the fact that I can’t sit down to watch a show in it’s entirety without being interrupted by a screaming baby or endless amounts of chores to be done. Don’t get me wrong, I am chomping at the bit for Nashville to come back on in the fall (Deacon CAN’T die, can he?), but it’s been refreshing to have time in the evening to do other things. Here are a few (mostly free) of my favorite things to do instead of watch the tube:

  • Send a handwritten note to someone just because
  • Play a board game or start a puzzle — Our favorites are Scrabble, Jenga and card games like Gin or Speed. I can’t get Trent to do a puzzle with me to save our lives, but I love ’em! Must be genetic, right Little Branches?
  • Plan your weekly menu or experiment with a new dish, dessert or cocktail
  • Update your resume just because
  • Go thrift shopping at your local antique store or flea market, you’ll be surprised what you can find
  • Clutter-bust and donate (a personal favorite)
  • Take a bubble bath
  • Dust your baseboards (let’s be honest, this NEVER gets done)
  • Go to the arboretum or your favorite local park or lake
  • Go swimming at night, like actual “get your hair wet, do flips in the pool” kinda swimming
  • Clean out your refrigerator
  • Instead of eating dinner in, make a picnic and go sit outside
  • Read that book you still haven’t finished
  • Take a drive and see where you end up — Trent and I ended up at my old elementary playground once, I forgot how much I love swings!
  • Listen to music with a bottle of wine
  • Get in a workout
  • Take your dogs for a walk — Henry and Fender never get enough of this
  • Write
  • Find a restaurant with live music
  • Backup and organize all of your photos and music
  • Volunteer somewhere, like your local food bank, church nursery or local children’s hospital
  • Offer to babysit your friends kiddos so they can have a night out alone (this may or may not be an attempt to get free babysitting… anyone? Anyone?)
  • Get tickets (often free) to your local comedy club
